Race Overview

Following the announcement that incumbent Peter Vallone Jr. would be running for Queens Borough president, Costa Constantinides – seen as a rising star in city politics – quickly consolidated support for the open seat in the 22nd District. Constantinides has been a staff member of numerous City Council members over the years and is well known in the community as an active community organizer and District Leader. While he will face Danielle de Stefano in the primary, institutional backing from unions, political clubs, and donors have all rallied around Constantinides. Republican Daniel Peterson – who represents a substantial bloc of Republican voters in this area of Queens – and Green Party candidate Lynn Serpe will also be running for the seat, yet both face long odds in pulling off an upset. Barring any major surprises, it would appear all but certain that Constantinides will be taking office come January 1, 2014.
